Arthur Rick Shaw is the church mouse of the private detective world. He lives and works in a rented office in Hammersmith. His life is focused upon food, shelter and child support commitments to several women.

Rick is commissioned by the notorious Merkin brothers to find the daughter of their business associate. Things are not quite as they are painted to be; there is no business associate although there is a Government Inquiry threatening to damage the Merkins. The woman is missing and the Merkins do want her found, but not for the reasons they’ve given. Rick is drawn into a world of political intrigues, strange sexual practices and dangerous liaisons where the Merkins have the political establishment by the balls.

With help from Wrong Hole Bob, Rick uncovers the infidelity of Lady Adverse Camber and her affair with the definitely dangerous Long John. Fed up with being the Merkin’s right-hand man Long John conspires with rival gang boss Claw-Hammer Carpenter to remove the Merkins.

Rick finds the girl, but the Merkins have him on a hook and they’re unprepared for the surprises Rick arranges as he struggles to escape from an invitation he couldn’t safely refuse.
